To make matters worse when her nan arrives, she and robin redbreast do not get along at all. Grandmother favors redbreasts younger brother over Robin because in her culture, boys are more desirable. This becomes almost too much for Robin to wrap up and soon she refuses to talk to or even look at her Grandmother.

Throughout the book it seems that Robin and her Grandmother will neer get along until one day, Robin finds grandmother drenching her feet in a tubful of water and notices how they look deformed and bruised. Grandmother is very abashed that Robin has seen her feet.
